Being a geek can be pretty hard at the best of times, I can tell you! But why the blazes should it be??? Just because you happen to have an interest in techy stuff, you should not be made to feel like some kind of ‘tedium leper’! However, I’m afraid that’s exactly what it is like a lot of the time. Just try putting yourself in my shoes; wondering whether or not you are boring the pants off everyone you are talking to!

Now, I’m not trying to make you feel sorry for me here (even if this post does sound as though it’s brimming over with self-pity)… But the thing is, I’m getting really tired of people thinking I’m a bore. It isn’t fair and I’ve decided that I’m simply not prepared to put up with it any longer! I like my computer, I like my gadgets and there’s no reason why I should feel bad about it!!!

So, what am I actually going to do about all of this? What course of action am I actually planning to take? Well, that’s simple; I’m going to carry on just the same way as I always have… except I shall make a point of looking bored with other people! Yes, the next time someone starts harping on about football, fast cars or supermodels, I will make it quite clear that I’d rather be standing at home watching my kettle coming up to the boil.

Ha! They’ll certainly be ‘No more Mr Nice Guy'from now onwards; no sir. This geek’s gone baaaaaad!!! So just you remember that, all of you ‘let’s-have-a-laugh-at-the-nerd'people. And the next time you want a gadget fixing or your OS is running mysteriously slow, I absolutely refuse to help you out! Even if you come begging me with a smile as wide as an exhibition stand, the answer will still be a resounding, ‘NO!!!’.

And that’s because this techno worm has turned!

These days you’d see almost everyone sporting some trendy and compact computing devices in form of tablets, smartphones and handheld PCs. Until few years ago, it was just a dream to stay connected with the world without using the wired Internet. However, with constant evolutions in the infrastructure, hardware, and software technology, you can carry your own little computers in your pockets and use them for the purposes even bulky computers couldn’t do until nearly a decade ago.

Last few years have seen unprecedented evolutions in the wireless computing. With the advent of major operating systems, such as iOS, Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile, smartphones are increasingly becoming powerful and more versatile. At present, the market is flooded with countless phones powered by these powerful operating systems at various price levels. Amongst the latest operating systems, iOS and Android are the largest share holders of the smartphone market these days. At such a time, Canonical plans to launch the mobile version of its popular Ubuntu distribution of Linux.

Canonical have recently revamped the appearance of Ubuntu by transforming its Unity Desktop. Its user interface is intended to be compatible with the desktops as well as tablets such that it can be used in a search driven way. Since today’s computing has not remained itself limited to the computers, it’s a sensible thought to extend the capability of the popular Ubuntu operating system to be used on the handheld computing devices like smartphones and tablets as well.

However, a mobile-oriented version of Ubuntu will be launched only after reviewing the success of the recent transformation of the Unity Desktop. Whereas this might be an interesting news for the lovers of technology, it will be an equally interesting event for the veterans of the gadget market to see how the Ubuntu Linux fares in the fierce competition of the market already prevailed by giants like Apple and Google. It’s definitely not a fuel supply contract that has a relatively complex aftermath; it will be a beginning of a new and more competitive market scenario once a pure Linux distro like Ubuntu arrives into the bigger scene.

After much hype and publicity, the Skype for iPad has been finally released giving users of this popular gadget another great way to connect with other people to any place on earth. A free download is now officially available after it was prematurely launched and withdrawn from ITunes Stores only hours after its initial release. Although the iPad is already bundled with Fring, (another excellent teleconference application) and Apple’s Facetime, Skype presented an extra bonus for consumers.

Skype is already available to iPhone users since January 2010. The application offers a remarkable addition to communication tools giving users of iPad2 an option to use both cameras owing to its large screen. They can make use of the landscape and portrait mode allowing users to change views when using video calls with other contacts.

The application’s interface on the iPad shows a grid display for user’s contacts. Sufficient space is included to place a large avatar of their contacts for easier navigation. Short message texting is allowable using the dial pad as well as instant messaging while on a call. So users can now keep in great touch wih each other and talk about all sorts of thing from sports to Hotels in Looe.

Skype offers more flexibility due to its compatibility with different operating systems like Mac OS and Windows. It is also a standard application on Android mobile phone, iPhone, the Internet- ready TVs or even on the PSP. Another feature is the capability to place calls to landlines to any part of the world with a specific airtime charge.

At present, Skype is being purchased by Microsoft and is already available on Facebook as an additional application plug-in used for video calling friends and contacts.

Caffeine: Geeks usually are in love with caffeine. Be creative with this as well; you can buy caffeinated lip balm, a hand-held espresso machine or caffeinated soap.

Buying for a geek doesn’t have to be a challenge but it can be a lot of fun.

Wi-Fi tethering is a system where you can use your phone as a wireless router using the fast 3G network provided by your network provider.

To use your iPhone 4 as a Wi-Fi hotspot you will have to use the latest version of iOS which means the version 4.3.

In order to do that you will have to connect your phone with a PC. Then open iTunes Main Menu and under ‘Devices'click on ‘Check for update’. If your iOS version is old it will be automatically upgraded to the la test version.

After you have upgraded to the latest version of iOS you will have to go to the Settings menu. Then you will be able to find the option named ‘Personal Hotspot’. You will have to tap on that to switch it on. That’s it. You have successfully created a Wi-Fi hotspot with your iPhone 4.

After that you will have to go to the personal hotspot settings and change the default password in order to make your hotspot more secure. Now check for Wi-Fi connection from any Wi-Fi supported device. You will find your iPhone hotspot listed.

But one thing you will have to do even before doing all these which is subscribing to a special data plan for Wi-Fi tethering of your network operators.
