Advantages of Web Based Applications
Web-based applications are software programs and tools that you access from a website rather than from your computer’s installed programs library. A popular web-based application is webmail. In the past, e-mail was managed from a program installed on your computer, such as Outlook or Eudora. Today, many individuals (and organizations) manage their e-mail via a web-based application such as gMail and hotmail. There are many advantages of web-based applications.
One advantage is the notion of “cross-platform compatibility”. This means that an application can be used regardless of operating system (such as Windows, Mac or Linux). This can be possible because the applications are being accessed in a web browser over the Internet. No other special software is needed, so software developers do not need to develop special versions for the different operating systems.
Another advantage is the ease of maintenance and use. Users (or clients) do not need to install anything to their machines to use the program. Maintaining the applications are easy, too, since updates are made to the web application on the server rather than installing updates on individual machines.
Anytime, anywhere access is another advantage of web-based applications. Since all the data in the application is stored securely on a web server, users such as persons who have London teaching jobs, do not need to be in a specific location, or using a specific machine to access the application. Again, all they need is access to the Internet.
Lower costs are another advantage of web-based applications. Users no longer need to purchase expensive software licenses (many web-based applications are available at lower costs, and provide instant updates). For organizations, the lower costs can be attributed to lower maintenance costs and software license fees. More efficient, streamlined business processes resulting from web-based applications can result in greater productivity as well.
