Save Power and Save Your Computer

One of the most important ways to reduce carbon footprints and ensure that energy consumption decreases is by using power management options on your computer. Power saving modes lower the electricity and energy consumption as well as protect you computer from unnecessary deterioration. These modes are also available on all standard Mac and Windows operating systems. When turned on, this mode places the monitor, hard drive storage units, and the rest of the computer into a low power mode. There is a “sleep” mode and a “hibernate” mode. The hibernation mode saves more power than the sleep mode since it essentially means the computer has effectively shut down. The sleep option on the other hand turns off the processor but the rest of the parts continue to function.
Laptops are much more environmentally friendly than desktop personal computers.
Desktops can consume within 50 to 250 watts of energy in an hour while a standard laptop needs about 45 watts. The use of the power management options reduces energy expenditure, noise, cooling costs and increases the battery life of the laptop. As a result, power is saved while at the same time, the computer works more efficiently.
By using these power saver tips, there is a reduction of almost half of a ton of CO2 emissions. Plus, energy costs of more than $50 per year can be saved. While screen savers were earlier held to be good ways of decreasing energy consumption, recent studies show that it is cheaper and more effective to allow the monitor to dim after a period of inactivity. When speakers, printers or scanners are not being used, it is best to turn them off so as to save on valuable energy.
Finally, the most important thing to remember is always switch off the computer when it is not in use. This saves on a whole lot of power and ensures the computer works better and lasts longer.
